Global warming is cooking the earth. The heat is getting unbearable and today everybody is depending on air conditioners to cool themselves. Since everybody prefers staying indoors, the people have no other choice than switching on the air conditioners. Instead of spending sleepless nights without an air conditioner it better to buy an air conditioner as early as possible. So you have decided to buy an air conditioner! Well, that’s a good decision. You must be having a lot of questions in your mind regarding the purchase of an air conditioner. The first question that comes to everybody’s mind is - what size air conditioner do I need? So let me answer your question and I hope you will get a clear picture of the size of air conditioner you require.

Factors to consider when deciding the size:

There are many types of air conditioners; the window or wall air conditioner, the split systems, ducted systems, portable systems and the evaporative systems. Two major decisions will guide you in purchasing your air conditioner; one is the energy efficiency of the unit and the other is the size of the unit. The size of the air conditioner you need to buy depends on various factors like, what type of room you want to air condition- bedroom, lounge, dining room, or kitchen? What type of ceiling you have in that room- whether standard, cathedral or high? The size of the windows in the room- whether small or large? Which direction you prominent windows face? Which type of doors in the room- small or large? And the most important factor is the size of the room. How many square feet or square meter is the room? Only after you have noted down all these factors, you can decide on the size of the air conditioner.

Bigger is not better:

Some people have wrongly understood that the bigger the air conditioner the more cooling it gives. Actually this is not true. When it comes to air conditioners, the bigger it is does not mean the better it is. Sometimes people unknowingly purchase too large a model. Actually a large unit gives less cooling. In a large air conditioner the time run is short, that it does not remove the entire moisture from the room so as to give you the cooling and comfort you require. If your air conditioner does not give you enough cooling, maybe it is because it is oversized. And if your air conditioner is too small, the unit will try to pump out more than it’s possible and it will get over worked, which will end in its failure to cool.

British Thermal Units (BTU):

The size of the air conditioner refers to the air conditioners cooling capacity, measured in British Thermal Units (BTU). This refers to the heat removed in an hour. Which means, how much of heat is transferred from the room to be cooled to the outside? The more BTU’s your air conditioner has, then more space it can cool. The bigger the room, the bigger is the BTU you A/C requires. A 5000 BTU window air conditioner will remove 5000 BTU’s of heat per hour. Similarly a one ton air conditioner will remove 12000 BTU’s of heat per hour and a two ton air conditioner will remove 24000 BTU’s of heat per hour. So depending on the size of the room, you can decide about the size of your air conditioner. First calculate the size of the room, by calculating the width of the room by length of the room. This will let you know how many square feet your room is. Roughly we can say that if your room is 100-250 sq. ft. you will need an A/c with the size of 5000 to 6000 BTU’s; 250-400 sq. ft. 6000-8500 BTU’s; 400 to 550 sq. ft. 8000-11000 BTU’s and 550- 875 sq. ft. 11000-15000 BTU’s. The direction the room is facing also has to be taken into account.

When it comes to air conditioners, the size really matters. So decide which room you want to be air conditioned, calculate the size of the room and then consider the size of the air conditioner to be purchased. But it is always best to ask an expert on air conditioners to come to your house and see which size is suitable for your room.
